Yelahanka (Kannada:ಯಲಹಂಕ) is a suburb of Bangalore in the Indian state of Karnataka originally envisaged as a satellite town of Bangalore city, but now part of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

About Yelahanka[edit]

Yelahanka is a place with rich heritage. It is located near the fast developing northern section of Greater Bangalore, about 14 kilometres from downtown Bangalore. The sex ratio in this city is rather favorable for the female population. Around 45% of the population is made up of females. This is quite unlike places like Haryana where the ratio is low.

National Highway NH7 passes through Yelahanka and newly constructed NH7 passes through the north eastern fringes of Yelahanka, acting as a bypass road to avoid the Yelahanka suburb. State Highway 9 (Bangalore - Hindupur) passes through Yelahanka bisecting the suburb into Old Town and New Town. In recent times, Yelahanka has become one of the main business centres of Bangalore City. Yelahanka's business areas are Hospital Main Road and BB road in Yelahanka and in New Town are 16th 'B' Cross and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Roads.

Yelahanka has lakes surrounding it, the prominent ones being Yelahanka Kere and Puttenhalli lake which has officially been declared a bird sanctuary.

Geography[edit]

Yelahanka is at a height of about 915 metres (3000 feet) above mean sea level. Due to its higher altitude from mean sea level, it is lush green and has pleasant weather year round.

Demographics[edit]

As of 2001 India census,[2] Yelahanka had a population of 93,263. Males constituted 54% of the population and females 46%. The literacy rate was 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 80%, and female literacy was 68%. Eleven percent of the population were under 6 years of age.

As per recent estimates, the population of Yelahanka has risen to about 3,00,000[3] in 2011.
