WeatherNation is an American broadcast, cable and satellite television network that is owned by WeatherNation, Inc. The network broadcasts weather forecasts and weather-related news, including periodic coverage of severe and tropical weather events, as well as local weather segments. The network's studio facilities are located in the Minneapolis suburb of Excelsior, Minnesota, while its headquarters, additional studios, and master control facilities are located in the Denver suburb of Greenwood Village, Colorado.

History[edit]

WeatherNation, Inc. was founded in 2010 as a syndication service for local television stations, cable and satellite operators.

In May 2010, the company launched The Weather Cast, a channel that was developed for satellite provider Dish Network with the intent to replace The Weather Channel, which had been involved in a carriage dispute with Dish over a planned increase in retransmission consent payments and the provider's dissatisfaction with the channel's decreased reliance on weather forecasts in favor of entertainment programming; Dish Network had planned to drop The Weather Channel should the two parties have been unable to reach an agreement. The Weather Cast existed for four days, ceasing operations on May 24, 2010, when The Weather Channel reached a multi-year carriage agreement with Dish Network.

On March 30, 2011, WeatherNation, Inc. announced that it would launch a new national weather channel, to be named WeatherNation, beginning in the second quarter of 2011, with cable television providers that were members of the National Cable Television Cooperative being the first to offer the new network.[1] WeatherNation TV launched on May 2011, and was rolled out to all of the participating systems by the last week of July 2011.[2]

WeatherNation would gain its first broadcast television outlet by October 2011, WHDT in Stuart, Florida, serving the West Palm Beach television market, with translators in Naples and Miami, Florida, and Boston, Massachusetts.[3] WIYC in Montgomery, Alabama also started carrying WeatherNation in October 2011.[4] Further expansion of its broadcast affiliate body continued in January 2012, when WeatherNation added affiliates in Minneapolis, Minnesota (KARE-TV;[5] KMYA-DT in Little Rock, Arkansas; KFDF-CA in Fort Smith, Arkansas; and Springfield, Missouri.[6]

Programming[edit]

WeatherNation TV provides national, regional and local weather forecast segments as well as specialty forecasts (such as for business and leisure travel). Unlike The Weather Channel and similar to The Local AccuWeather Channel, national segments on the network are a mix of live and pre-recorded segments, with taped segments being updated every three to six hours; this fact had been the source of criticism from viewers since shortly after it first began to be carried by DirecTV, as WeatherNation TV continued to air its regular forecast segments instead of running wall-to-wall coverage – offering only periodic updates each hour – during ongoing severe weather and winter storm events.[7]

National segments are presented by on-camera meteorologists employed with WeatherNation. Locally produced weather forecast segment be provided by the participating WeatherNation TV affiliate, either in the form of pre-recorded segments conducted by the affiliate's weather staff or via a graphical forecast segment using the network's on-air graphics package (similar in format to The Weather Channel's Local on the 8s); these 60-second forecasts are usually shown after blocks of most national forecast segments, running nine times an hour at – or sometimes, approximately – times ending in "5" (for example, 6:55 p.m. or 9:35 a.m.) and at 59 minutes past the hour. The national forecast segment that airs in place of the localized segments on the national feed includes computer model forecasts for the next 48 hours, active weather alerts, current temperatures and composite satellite/radar loops for the contiguous United States.

Weather information on WeatherNation TV is displayed continuously on a banner appearing at the lower third of the screen – with the network's logo bug placed on the left side – which is visible even during commercial breaks; it displays current weather conditions, daypart and five-day forecasts (on the national feed, current weather observations and forecasts for 50 major U.S. cities are shown). The banner also employs a severe weather mode during inclement weather; active weather alerts issued by the National Weather Service within the station's viewing area (or on the national feed, alerts in effect throughout the United States) are displayed on a separate red-colored banner placed above the forecast banner, with a weather radar loop displayed in a self-contained box on the right side of both.

Availability[edit]

The network is primarily carried on broadcast television stations throughout the U.S. Not all of the network's broadcast affiliates air WeatherNation TV's complete schedule; affiliates pre-empt three hours a week of the network's programming (either consecutively or in a half-hour stripped format) to air children's programs acquired from the syndication market to fulfill the Federal Communications Commission's educational programming requirements (which require stations to carry additional E/I content on their subchannels, regardless of the subchannel's programming format). Depending on whether the affiliated station has a news department, stations carrying the network may also breakaway from the network's content if the station wants to utilize the subchannel for either extended severe weather or breaking news coverage or to push regularly scheduled network programming from the station's main feed to the WeatherNation subchannel (depending on the subchannel placement of WeatherNation and the station's carriage of additional subchannel services) during said news or weather coverage that requires the station to pre-empt the programs on its primary channel.

In addition, WeatherNation TV's programming is streamed live on the network's website, on its Android and Apple mobile apps as well as select Samsung and Sony TVs and Blu-ray players.[9][10][11][12] On September 13, 2013, WeatherNation TV launched a channel on the Roku streaming player, which provides the live national feed, on-demand video and local current weather conditions and forecasts.[13]

WeatherNation TV's national feed began to be carried on satellite provider DirecTV on channel 361 on December 16, 2013; the provider reached a temporary carriage agreement with the network as it was renegotiating its contract with The Weather Channel (which was carried on channel 362).[14] After DirecTV dropped The Weather Channel on January 14, 2014 due to the reasons behind Dish Network's planned removal of the channel in May 2010, the provider began to also carry WeatherNation on channel 362,[15] which lasted until The Weather Channel and DirecTV struck a new carriage agreement on April 8, 2014 that restored TWC to channel 362; however, WeatherNation continues to be carried on channel 361 as DirecTV had signed a long-term agreement to carry the network on April 2, one week prior to The Weather Channel agreement.[16]
