Background

One-term incumbent Democrat Jeff Merkley was elected with 49% of the vote in 2008. This race is viewed by state Republicans as potentially competitive, due to his small margin of victory in 2008, and his rating by the National Journal as tied for most liberal Senator.[1][2]
