Plot[edit]

In the "Great Disaster", Japan has been thrown into chaos by onmyouji. Harutora Tsuchimikado was born into an onmyouji family, but has no power whatsoever. His estranged childhood friend appears one day to take him up on a promise he made long ago to become her shikigami (familiar).

Characters[edit]

Main Characters[edit]

Harutora Tsuchimikado (土御門 春虎 Tsuchimikado Harutora?)
Voiced by: Kaito Ishikawa, Risa Taneda (young)
The main protagonist of 1st arc and the son of the branch family of Tsuchimikado clan. Despite being born into a distinguished onmyouji family, he has no magical powers. He had been living a normal and laid back life seeing that he could not accomplish anything without any magical powers. When he was young, he made a promise with Natsume to become her shikigami and protect her. After witnessing the death of Hokuto, he became Natsume's shikigami to keep his promise he made to her many years ago. He seems to have some sort of 'Bad luck' which he considers an ancient curse passed down by his ancestors. He is really weak in studies and is usually tutored by Natsume to avoid being held back a year. Later in the Light Novel, the real identity of Harutora is revealed. He is the real reincarnation of Yakou Tsuchimikado. When he and Natsume were born, their places were exchanged. He was sent to the branch family and Natsume was sent to the main family. In the moment he regained his memories of the previous life, Natsume was killed. He performed the Taizan Fukun Ritual and revived her. He eventually stays by Natsume's side as she wakes up and kisses her, telling her that he is sorry and he hopes that one day they will meet again.
Natsume Tsuchimikado (土御門 夏目 Tsuchimikado Natsume?)
Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
The main protagonist of 2nd arc and Harutora's childhood friend and the daughter of the main family of Tsuchimikado clan. She is a prodigal onmyouji attending school in Tokyo. During summer break, she comes to Harutora's town to interrupt his peaceful life by holding him to the promise he made long ago to become her familiar. She is heir to the Tsuchimikado family and is assumed to be the reincarnation of Yakou Tsuchimikado. As a family tradition, she has to present herself as male in front of other onmyouji families, a tradition that was created to hide the true identity of Yakou's reincarnation. However, they found out that she was actually a girl when her clothes were torn apart. She has a Gohou-Type shikigami (Defense Familiars) called Hokuto, a true dragon spirit that has served the main family of Tsuchimikados for generations. She deeply cares about her family reputation and holds the burden of being the next heir of the Tsuchimikado clan. After the incident with Suzuka Dairenji, she is shown to be wearing the same ribbon Hokuto won from Harutora in the shooting game. She cares about Harutora and has had a crush on him since childhood.

He enrolled the Onmyo Academy in Tokyo along with Harutora. He usually helps Harutora whenever he gets in trouble. He is always seen wearing a green bandanna. Two years prior to the story, it was revealed that he was possessed by the oni which caused the Spiritual Disaster. Thus in the end he became a half-oni and now tries to gain control to contain the oni within himself. The reason he enrolled to Onmyo Academy was to purify the oni inside him.

Although being a powerful onmouji, she is regarded as the weakest Divine General as stated by Reiji Kagami. She is the daughter of the deceased Divine General and the former leader of the Twin Horn Syndicate, Shidou Dairenji. In episode 3, it was revealed that she and her brother were subjected to deadly experiments by their father before and after their birth which resulted her being an excellent Onmyouji. Her brother later died due to the experiments and hence she came to Harutora's town to perform the Taizan Fukun Ritual and revive her dead brother. She was also guilty for her actions which lead to Hokuto's death but Harutora releases her from her guilt when he reveals that Hokuto was remotely controlled by its user. Most of her magic was temporarily sealed by Onmyo Agency and she later enrolls in the Onmyo Academy as her punishment for the incident in the country side.

After a series of events, she reconciles with Harutora establishing a friendship based on common ground. She also reveals two surprising truths; first being, that Kurahashi's were once a branch family of the Tsuchimikado's. Second, she had once visited Tsuchimikado's home as very young child and Kyouko had made a certain promise with Natsume at the time. But once they had reunited again Natsume treated her like a complete stranger, frustrated at having her feelings trampled she used Harutora as a pretext to start fights with Natsume. However ironically in reality, the person she met that day wasn't Natsume, but Harutora who she mistook as Natsume. After helping Harutora save Natsume from a Yakou Disciple the two make up. This later causes her to admit to Natsume that she is in love with Harutora, because he is her first love. While searching for Suzuka, Harutora meets an unusual senior third year student who seems interested in Kon. Later in the evening, Suzuka reveals to Harutora that the Onmyo Agency sealed most of her magic powers and gave her a penalty of staying in Onmyo Academy for three years. The next day, she keeps wanting to meet Natsume. Touji suggests that Harutora tell her about Natsume's circumstances regarding the family tradition to dress as a boy. Harutora talks to Suzuka; she cries that even though she killed Hokuto, Harutora doesn't resent her. Suzuka notices a barrier placed on Natsume's closet, but Natsume summons Hokuto and ends the situation.

The next day, Harutora notices that Kon is still in her physical form and can't transform back. Touji suggests that it was Natsume and Suzuka's fault due to the spells used in the closet incident. She causes trouble in the cafeteria when she is mistaken for a tiger Shikigami. The school issues a tiger warning and calls Onmyo Agency for help. The principal and Zenjirou conclude that someone sent a tiger Shikigami to attack the students. While Suzuka helps Kon escape, Zenjirou attacks them. Suzuka believes Natsume is but can't be sure. She tells them about the "Raven Coat," a spiritual tool Yakou used to wear that is the only way to find out if Natsume really is his reincarnation. Jin Ohtomo and the principal overhear their conversation. Jin believes that the real Raven Coat is in Onmyo Academy and the one in Onmyo Agency is just a replica, information he learned from "Ryo Saotome". The next day Harutora is stopped by Kyouko who wants to know if he really likes Suzuka. Out of nowhere, Suzuka steps in and rants on about how Harutora likes Hokuto and not her. Harutora tells Kyouko about how Hokuto was a Shikigami being controlled outside, and Kyouko speculates that Hokuto's controller had to be very powerful to make Hokuto seem like a real person for so long. Later on the bus ride home, Harutora notices the pink ribbon in Natsume's hair and realizes that its the exact ribbon he won for Hokuto at the fair, making him believe that Hokuto's real controller was Natsume.

Reception[edit]

In Anime News Network's Fall 2013 Anime Preview Guide, reviewers Rebecca Silverman and Theron Martin gave the series an initial rating of 2 out of 5 stars, while reviewers Carlo Santos and Carl Kimlinger gave the series an initial rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars.[25] Martin commented that "the artistic effort is wholly unimpressive beyond the yukata that Hokuto wears and the CG creations stand out too starkly against the regular animation. Director Takaomki Kanasaki is quite capable of producing fun, stylish fare (as he proved with Is This a Zombie?), but this definitely does not qualify. Only some decent early character development saves this one from the garbage pile,"[26] while Santos gave a slightly more positive review, stating that "Tokyo Ravens is nothing special, but it isn't horrible, either. This supernatural adventure series employs all the usual trappings of the genre, but does so without making a mess of the story or throwing too many ideas in. In fact, it even spends a good amount of time on the characters' day-to-day lives, instead of rushing them into the action."[27] Silverman praised the series' art and character designs, as well as the series' use of both 2D and 3D CGI graphics, but concludes that "right now it feels like a hodgepodge of ideas that hasn't quite gotten itself grounded yet,"[28] while Kimlinger criticized the series' poor start and use of clichés, stating that "watching Tokyo Ravens is probably the closest you'll get to experiencing precognition. In a show that gets the desired effect from its tropes, that wouldn't be a problem. But Ravens only does its tropes half-right."[29]
