The recording career of the English rock group the Kinks spanned more than 30 years between 1964 and 1996. In that time the group released 25 studio albums and had many hit singles including three UK number one singles starting in 1964 with Hard Rock hit You Really Got Me which subsequently infuelenced Heavy Metal music in the 1970's, they had 18 Top 40 singles in the 1960's alone and further Top 40 hits in the 1970's and 1980's.

The Kinks music often focuses on everyday subjects for working class people in Britain and are known for their poetic lyrics about subjects like fashion followers in Dedicated Follower of Fashion, poverty in Dead End Street and environment issues in Apeman.

  1. ^ "Long Tall Sally" did not chart on the Record Retailer chart (now regarded as the 'official' chart) but did reach #42 on the Melody Maker chart which was arguably more important at the time.
  2. ^ "Long Tall Sally" did not chart in the US until late 1964, after several other Kinks singles had charted.
  3. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t UK releases. "You Still Want Me", "Lincoln County", "Hold My Hand", "Plastic Man", "Drivin'", "Shangri-La", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Holiday Romance", "Ducks On The Wall", "You Can't Stop The Music", "No More Looking Back", "Black Messiah", "Moving Pictures", "Pressure", "Predictable", "Good Day", "The Road", "Down all the Days (Till 1992)", "Scattered" and "Only a Dream" were all UK/European releases, and were not released as singles in the US.
  4. ^ "You Still Want Me" was the intended second U.S. single, backed with You Do Something To Me. Both of these tracks, along with both sides of their first U.S. single, were issued as a bootleg EP with very little value.
  5. ^ a b "Ev'rybody's Gonna Be Happy" and "Who'll Be The Next In Line" were respectively the A-side and B-side of a UK/European single. This single was released several months later in North America, with the A-side and B-side reversed.
  6. ^ a b c d "A Well Respected Man","Mr. Pleasant", "Starstruck" and "Lola (Live)" were released as singles in continental Europe and North America only.
  7. ^ "A Well Respected Man" was originally released (September 1965) in the UK on the 45rpm 7" EP Kwyet Kinks which was not eligible for the UK singles chart.
  8. ^ a b European releases. "Wonder Where My Baby Is Tonight" and "Dandy" were released as singles in continental Europe only.
  9. ^ a b c d "Death Of A Clown", "Susannah's Still Alive", "Lincoln County" and "Hold My Hand" were solo singles initially credited to Dave Davies. All have subsequently been reissued as Kinks tracks on various Kinks albums.
  10. ^ a b c d e f g h i j k l m U.S. releases. "The Village Green Preservation Society", "20th Century Man", "One Of The Survivors", "Money Talks", "Preservation", "Starmaker", "I'm In Disgrace", "A Gallon Of Gas", "Catch Me Now I'm Falling", "You Really Got Me (Live)", "Destroyer", "Summer's Gone" and "Rock 'n' Roll Cities" were US single releases. While some of these were also released as singles in other territories, none of these were released as singles in the UK.
  11. ^ a b "You Really Got Me" was reissued for its 40th anniversary as a replica of the original Pye 2 track 7" single and a CD single which added rarity "Misty Water". "Waterloo Sunset" was reissued for its 40th anniversary as a replica of the original UK Pye 2 track 7" single and a CD single which was a replica of the French 4 track EP.
