The Step Up films are a series of dance/romance-drama films based on the characters by Duane Adler and Melissa Rosenberg. The first film, Step Up, directed by Anne Fletcher and Mico Heltborg, was released in 2006. Jon M. Chu went on to direct its two sequels: Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D. Chu went on only to produce the fourth entry, Step Up Revolution, while Scott Speer directed it. Although the films have had a mixed to negative reception from film critics, they received positive responses from audiences and have been commercially successful, grossing over $564 million worldwide.[1]

Critical reaction[edit]

The series has overall had a mixed to negative reception. The review aggregator, Metacritic has the films receiving a rating of between 43 for the lowest rated, Step Up Revolution and 50 for the highest rated Step Up 2: The Streets. Based on the review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, the mostly positively received film in the series is the third film, Step Up 3D, with 46% of 117 critics listed on the website giving a positive review. The first film in the series, Step Up is the most negatively received film with only 19% of 103 critics listed on Rotten Tomatoes giving a positive review.
