Saraswatichandra was an Indian soap opera, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The show was initially based on Govardhanram Tripathi's novel of the same name. It aired on Star Plus from February 25, 2013 to September 20, 2014.[1]

Plot summary[edit]

Saras is the son of a rich man, who moved from India to Dubai. His father arranges his marriage with his best friend Vidyachatur's daughter, Kumud. Saras rejects the marriage, but Kumud insists that Saras reject the proposal himself in front of her father. He goes back to India and slowly starts adjusting to the family's ways. Saras and Kumud soon fall in love, but Saras' stepmother, Ghumaan, doesn't want to see him happy and so she reveals the truth about his mother's death. After finding out this truth, Saras disowns his father and decides to leave home. He then breaks the marriage with Kumud, believing according to tradition that since he is no longer the son of a rich man, he will not be able to support her, and is therefore unworthy to be her husband.

Kumud does not want her family to be blamed for the broken marriage by society, and so agrees to marry the first proposal who comes forward without meeting the person. Her new husband Pramad turns out to be an alcoholic who was forced to marry her and treats her very badly. Whilst Saras appears at Kumud's in-laws in disguise as Naveenchandra, Kumud tries to influence Pramad and change his ways. Kumud fails as Kalika (Pramad's family maid) is an obstacle and wants Pramad and his money to herself. Soon, Pramad finds out that Saras is Naveen and also wants to get rid of Kumud. He and Kalika plot to kill Kumud, but Saras saves her. They return to Kumud's house where Saras tries to win everyone's trust again. After many hardships, Kumud succeeds in getting a divorce from Pramad. However, Kalika returns to her life after trapping Kumud's cousin Yash. Kalika becomes Yash's wife, and tries to split up Saras and Kumud again.

After many struggles, Saras' and Kumud's marriage is fixed, but Kalika wants to destroy their relationship. On their wedding day, some officials come and stop their marriage, saying that Kumud is legally Pramad's wife. Pramad's mother and Saras' father save the day, and they eventually marry. Saras is reunited with his father. Guman's plans backfire and she ends up in jail. Saras' mother turns out to be in a mental hospital, and is eventually reunited with Saras and her other son Kabir, who Ghumaan tried killing when he was born. Kusum (Kumud's sister) marries Saras' other brother Danny, and Yash divorces Kalika. One day Kumud knows that she is pregnant. The doctor said that she had some complications.

In the final episodes, Kumud gives birth to a daughter, who she and Saras name Sanskriti.
