Career

Sambueza made his debut for River on November 30, 2003 in a 2–0 loss against Club Atlético Lanús. He was part of the team that won the Clausura 2004 title.

Sambueza has played 49 games scoring 3 goals, as well as 21 South American games scoring 17 goals.

In the summer of 2007 Sambueza was presented as number 11 worn by Hugo Sánchez and El Pareja Lopez Sr. He debuted in the Mexican division against Chivas de Guadalajara which the game ended in a tie. He assisted in many goals and scored 2 that season against Tigres, and the most noticed against Pachuca which led Pumas to go to the playoffs. But lost the finals against Atlante. So the next season came and Sambueza scored 2 more goals that season, and got payback when Pumas faced Atlante and scored the first goal in the game but later Atlante scored two and Pumas lost. Then Pumas faced Veracruz and Sambueza scored 1 out of the 4. So then the season ended and Sambueza went back to River Plate.

In August 2008 Rubens moved, on loan, to Flamengo for a period of one year. He has been assigned with the number 10,[1] wore by Zico and vacant after Renato Augusto's transfer to Germany. On August 31, 2008, he debuted for Flamengo as a replacement for Éverton, in the Fla-Flu derby, when his club and Fluminense drew 2–2 for the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.[2]
