Perhaps Rodney's greatest result came at the 1982 U.S. Open, during his Grand Slam debut, when he got through to the quarterfinals overcoming Eliot Teltscher, seeded 8th, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1) in a long fourth round battle. He lost to eventual champion Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 once in the quarterfinals. Harmon is featured on Tennis Channel's Tennis Channel Academy, where he stars in a 30-minute coaching show. There, commentator Tracy Austin revealed that Rodney made headlines when he became the lone coach of the American 2008 Beijing Olympics tennis team.
Rodney was only the second African-American man to have reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals, alongside legend Arthur Ashe until James Blake in 2005. He currently directs the men's tennis division in the United States Tennis Association, and has the privilege to witness the best young rising United States junior stars.
Rodney was named head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women's tennis team on July 3, 2012.
