Development[edit]

Rumors of Harish Shankar directing NTR film, were afloat before Gabbar singh released and became a huge success but the project was delayed because NTR was busy with other commitments.[13] In May 2012, it was reported that NTR is making a movie with his close friend Kodali Nani under Harish Shankar direction.[14] Due to the political differences between NTR and Nani the movie is now produced by Dil Raju under their Sri Venkateswara Creations banner [15] The movie was officially announced by Harish Shankar in an interview after the big success of Gabbar Singh in July 2012 and revealed that the project would start after NTR completes the shooting for Baadshah. After the official announcement Harish Shankar revealed that NTR actually is a close friend and NTR accepted his story many years ago but the movie was delayed because of various reasons. There were a lot of rumors about the movie's title. It was first announced by the director Harish Shankar that the movie is titled MLA Manchi Lakshanalu unna Abbai but then because of creative differences the team removed the title MLA Manchi Lakshanalu unna Abbai.[16] Then it was rumored that the movie is titled Jana Gana Mana because Dil Raju under his banner reserved the title but it was later conformed by Dil Raju that the movie doesn't have a title yet and Jana Gana Mana was reserved for another movie under Sri Venkateswara Creations.[17] On 18 October 2012 the film`s muhurtham [18] and pooja ceremony were held in Dil raju's office in Hyderabad.[19][20] It was announced that S. Thaman would score the soundtrack and Chota K. Naidu will handle the camera.[21]

Casting[edit]

In October 2012, it was reported that Tamannaah was under consideration for the role opposite NTR.[22] It was declared as just a rumor and Harish Shankar on 19 November 2012 revealed via Twitter that they selected Samantha to play the main lead in the film.[23] Harish Shankar revealed that NTR will play the role of a college student in this film.[24] NTR will be acting as a back bench student and the movie will be an out and out commercial entertainer.[25] The director revealed there will be two female leads in the movie. There were rumors that Shruthi Hassan will be the second leading lady in this big project but it was confirmed as guest apperiance. In January 2013 Harish Shankar told in an interview that Shruthi Hassan is the second leading lady in this project and Shruthi Hassan confirmed it on 4 February 2013 via twitter.[26] Vidyullekha Raman is also playing a pivotal role in the movie and Vidyullekha Raman herself confirmed the news on her Twitter page.

Filming[edit]

It was announced that the regular shooting will start only after NTR completes shooting for Baadshah but in December 2012 after the gabbar singh movie. it was revealed by the director Harish Shankar that the regular shooting will start in January. The director also said the movie will not go to any foreign countries for songs. 80% of the movie will shoot in Hyderabad and the rest in Pollachi and songs in different location in India.[27] This Untitled Project's first Schedule Began on 4 January 2013 in Somajiguda Hyderabad and in this schedule NTR introduction fight and some scenes between the lead pair will be canned. The first schedule will end on 14 January.[28][29] The first schedule came to an end on 13 January. The team managed to wrap up the shoot in 9 days a day before the planned schedule.[30] After the First Schedule NTR moved on to Baadshah. After Baadshah NTR moved back to working on Ramayya Vasthavayya at Hitam College, on 12 April Harish Shankar via twitter revealed that they are shooting some teasing scenes between NTR and Samantha.[31] Shruti Haasan started working on this movie on 26 March and many vital scenes on NTR and Shruti Haasan were canned.[32] Later in the end of June, Samantha rejoined the sets of the film after her shoot in Europe for Attharintiki Daaredhi in Hyderabad.[33] The film shoot had a night schedule where the scenes were canned till 5:30 AM in the morning.[34] Later some wedding scenes were shot at Sierra Garden and Friendly Line areas of Ramoji Film City and NTR, Samantha participated in the shoot.[35] A song was canned on NTR at Annapurna 7 Acres.[36] In August, the climax of the film was shot at Hyderabad and 1000 Junior Artists joined the scene. It was told that Jr NTR performed it in a single take and 1 day talkie shoot and 3 songs were left to be shot.[37] Out of 3, 2 songs were planned to shoot in Spain where one would be shot on Jr NTR-Samantha and the other one on Jr NTR-Shruti Haasan pairs.[38] In September, a song on Hamsa Nandini and Jr NTR was canned at Annapoorna Studios whose completion would wrap up the entire shooting of the film.[39] As expected, the shooting came to an end on 27 September 2013.[40]

Soundtrack[edit]

S. Thaman composed the music for this film which marks his Third collaboration with Jr NTR and second collaboration with Harish Shankar. Aditya Music bagged the audio rights which was confirmed by them in their official twitter, Facebook pages and YouTube Channel.[41] On 19 September 2013 it was officially confirmed that the audio of the film would be launched on 21 September 2013 at Hotel Marriott in Hyderabad.[42] On 20 September 2013 the real track list was officially released with the promo songs released on the same day containing six tracks, with Ranjith, KK, Rahul Nambiar, Shankar Mahadevan, Naveen Madhav, Shreya Ghoshal and Suchitra providing the vocals.[43] On 21 September 2013 the Theatrical Trailer and Soundtrack Album were launched.[44] The audio received positive response from critics as well as audience.[45]

Release[edit]

It was announced that the film would release on 27 September 2013 which marks the 12th anniversary of NTR's first blockbuster Student No.1.[46] But due to political Disturbances prevailing in the state, the date was shifted to 11 October 2013.[47] with a 'A' certificate from the Censor Board due to some heavy action sequences without any cuts.[48] However the film was scheduled to be released in USA on 10 October 2013.[49] The film released in 1200 Screens Globally irrespective of the agitations in Seemandhra region due to the announcement of State Separation.[50] Lorgan Entertainment a leading independent distributor of Australia had acquired the distribution rights of the film.[51]

Reception[edit]

The film received average to good reviews . A Reviewer of Today's World has given 3.25 out of 5 and stated as "The first half of the film is Good with nice Pace, Screenplay and comedy. The second half is full of Violence and No comedy".[52] A review from Tupaki has given 2.5 out of 5 and stated as "Jr NTR tried new style in the movie regarding his characterization. Sometimes he looked like imitating Pawan Kalyan, but somehow presented himself in a new tone. In the first half, you love to watch that style. And in rest of scenes, Junior is quite regular".[53] The Times of India gave a review stating "The film is packaged entirely around its hero with NTR looking uber cool and as stylish as ever. He got into the skin of the character and has delivered a fantastic performance to shoulder the film. All in all, Ramayya Vasthavayya's first half is a fun-ride as you see NTR in his elements. However, the second half could be a disappointment."[54] The Hindu gave a review stating "Until a few minutes before the interval, you’re left looking beneath the surface of the comedy, songs and romance to see what the film is trying to communicate to you. And post interval, when the film takes you into a rural hamlet and recalls an ill-fated past followed by revenge, there’s way too much bloodshed that leaves you numb. Watch this film if you are an NTR fan."[55] FilmyScope.com gave a review as "Except NTR, nothing is in this movie. Old story and too much violence will bring the movie down. People expected some entertainment from this movie but there is no comedy at all. First half is not bad but people disappointed by seeing second half and routine climax with full of violence. Overall movie is below average." [56] Mahesh S Koneru of 123telugu.com gave a review stating "Ramayya Vasthavayya is a stylish mass entertainer that showcases all of NTR’s abilities very well. The superb first half is a big asset. A predictable and below par second half is a slight let down. However, the film should work well at the Box Office and NTR’s fans will be a delighted lot" and rated the film 3.25/5.[57] Shekhar Vijay of Oneindia Entertainment gave a review stating "Ramayya Vasthavayya is purely a mass masala entertainer that will impress all classes of audiences. Junior NTR's acting, Harish direction, Samantha's glamour and Thaman's music stand out in the film. It is s brilliant treat from Dil Raju team."[58] Cinecorn.com gave a review stating "In a nutshell, Ramayya Vastavayya is a movie for the fans. They will love Jr NTR. It is a movie aimed at masses, they would like it, irrespective of its predictability."[59] IndiaGlitz gave a review stating "In telling an outdated and damn predictable story, Harish Shankar S committed one blunder after another. His only trump card was a romantic NTR, who is seen imitating Dev Anand here and Victory Venkatesh there. A paper-thin storyline is the least of Ramayya's imperfections. Too much violence in the second half rips it of entertainment value" and rated the film 2.75/5.[60] IBN has given 1/5 rating.[61]

fullhyderabad.com gave a review stating "Ramayya Vastavayya crosses those limits comfortably. And a running time of 166 minutes means this Rammayya overstays his welcome. Go by all means if you are a fanboy, but for better results, spend the long weekend at home" and rated the film 5/10.[62] 143Cinema.com gave a review stating "A good first half and below par second half makes this movie an average treat. This movie will impress NTR’s fans for sure since all the facets of his acting skills are on display here like never before and looks wise this is his best outing till date. The box office performance of this movie depends on how the masses receive the second half" and rated the film 3/5.[63] Desimartini.com gave a review stating "Ramayya Vastavayya is an out-and-out NTR film. This is an attempt by the director to take the hero’s acting prowess to next level. In this process, he didn’t make an attempt to pen a good story. He simply culled the plot and the screenplay from various films and laced it with humor, songs and fights. It seems the reputation of Harish Shankar became a cast-iron straitjacket from which it’s difficult to break out, or he doesn’t want to break out" and rated the film 5/10.[64] telugucinema.com gave a review stating "Can watch it for its first half and for NTR. Other than that, the movie is just another routine revenge drama that fails to impress" and rated the film 2.75/5.[65] greatandhra.com gave a review stating "Harish Shankar tried to exploit NTR’s action image ignoring the muscle needed for romance and entertainment. Since he was unable to cook up the right plot, he should have focused on giving a tacky screenplay with very convincing and interesting dialogues to keep the audience hooked, but that didn’t happen completely" and rated the film 2.75/5.[66] apherald.com gave rating 2/5 stating that 'Ramayya Vasthavayya - Nandamuri Ramayye Kaapaadaalayya'.[67] howis.co.in rated this movie 3 out of 5. The rating has calculated by average rating of all popular Tollywood critic websites ratings.[68]

Box Office[edit]
