Peta Jane Murgatroyd (born 14 July 1986)[1] is an New Zealand/Australian professional dancer. She is best known for her appearances on the American edition of Dancing with the Stars.

Early life[edit]

Murgatroyd was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but moved to Australia at age 18 months; as a result, she considers herself more of an Aussie. She was raised in Perth, Western Australia, and started studying classical ballet at age 4. According to ABC, she trained for 12 years under former principal dancer of the Kirov Ballet, Madame Lubov Nikonorenko.

Career[edit]

Within three months of beginning ballroom training, Murgatroyd became the Australian State Champion and placed second in the Great World City Championships. Success at other competitions followed quickly; she was a semi-finalist in the Lion City Championships in Singapore and was a finalist in the Australian Open Championships. She placed 3rd in the world at the British Youth Latin Championships in Blackpool 2006.

Burn the Floor[edit]

Murgatroyd joined the cast of Burn the Floor in 2004, touring with them around the world for six years. When Burn the Floor landed on Broadway in August 2009, Murgatroyd was the lead female dancer.[2]

Dancing with the Stars[edit]

Murgatroyd joined the cast of Dancing with the Stars in 2011 as one of the troupe members in the 12th season. She became a regular member of the professional cast as of the 13th season, won Season 14, and was a part of the 15th season, the all-star version of the show.

2For this week only, as part of the "Partner Switch-Up" week, Maslow performed with Cheryl Burke instead of Murgatroyd; Murgatroyd danced a rumba with Olympic ice dancing champion Charlie White, scoring a 33 (7, 8, 9, 9).

Personal life[edit]

Murgatroyd dated Australian professional ballroom dancer and former DWTS cast member Damian Whitewood for five years. Their romance began while she was a member of the cast on Burn the Floor on Broadway. They eventually lived together in Los Angeles before breaking up in 2012.[2]

In 2012, Murgatroyd revealed that she and fellow DWTS pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy were dating.[4] The couple split after nearly 10 months of dating.[5]
