Pattam Pole (English: Like a Kite) is a 2013 Malayalam romantic film scripted by Girish Kumar, directed by renowned cinematographer Alagappan, who makes his directorial debut, and produced by Karunakaran under the banner of Carlton Films. The film tracks the relationship between a Brahmin youth, Karthik, and a Christian girl, Riya. Dulquer Salmaan plays the role of Karthik and new face Malavika Mohan, daughter of Bollywood cinematographer K. U. Mohanan, appears as Riya. Archana Kavi, Anoop Menon, Lalu Alex, Jayaprakash, Seetha, Leema Babu, Shraddha Gokul, Nandhu and Ilavarasu play supporting roles.[1] The film commenced its production in June 2013 and was mainly shot from Alappuzha in Kerala and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.

Plot[edit]

Karthi (Dulquer Salman) and Riya (Malavika Mohanan) elope one early morning to Ooty, fearing that the elders in the family will not accept their inter-religious relationship. They return to their respective homes after a couple of days after having a fight. They convince their loved ones that they hate each other and vow never to see each other again. The film would then trace the eventual course of their lives.

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

The film marks the directorial debut of veteran cinematographer Alagappan. The story has been nurtured by Alagappan for two and a half years. His story and idea found many takers and veteran producer Carlton Karunakaran readily agreed to produce the film. But Alagappan wanted to finish all his projects for other filmmakers before he donned the director's cap. In the meantime, he tightened his script and penned the dialogues in Tamil while Gireesh Kumar who wrote the scripts took care of the parts in Malayalam.[2]

The film commenced its production in June 2013 in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.[1] The major location was Alappuzha in Kerala where the film is mostly set.[3]

Critical reception[edit]

Pattam Pole is the directorial debut of the cameraman Azhagappan. Young sensational star Dulquer Salmaan Is The Hero Of The Movie. He Is Playing The Role Of Karthik and Malavika Mohanan as Riya Pairing Him. Girish Kumar Is The Writer Of This Film and Jomon T John Handling The DOP. The Supporting Stars are Archana Kavi, Anoop Menon, Jayaprakash, Lalu Alex, Shraddha Gokul, Anoop Menon etc.M Jayachandran Composing The Music For This Film. This Is The Comeback Movie of The Producer C Karunakaran, His Banner Carlton Films Produced Some Good Films In Malayalam. Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, Udayananu Tharam, Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka are some of them.

There are certain movies that appear very interesting and riveting on paper but sadly when made into a feature film somewhere things gets muddled and fails to create the same impact onscreen. Ace cinematographer Alagappan's directorial debut "Pattam Pole" is a classic example to the adage getting "lost in translation". It is not that the movie is a total wash out but the interesting moments which are few and far in between get marred by cutesy effort from the director. A simple story that could have been made in a more riveting manner gets diluted by the maker's over indulgence in his passion which is totally sucks out the soul from the narrative. In his pursuit to make a stylish movie, Alagappan ends up making a soulless movie.

Story is nothing new. Oft repeated theme of two youngsters from different religious background falling in love with each other and the problem that ensues. The relief here is that the problem doesn't come from neither the families nor the religious community. It is the egoistic and self-centered lovers themselves who become spoke in their own wheels. Interesting premise that but cliched screenplay with beaten to bushes scenes and dialogues mars the flow of the movie. To make the matters worse the screenplay is sluggish and the pace abysmal.

Dulquer Salman is all at sea with his performance as Karthik, a Tamil Brahmin who falls in love with a head-strong christian girl. It is probably for the first time that Dulquer is so careless with his performance. Only solace is his rendition of Tamil dialogues which don't carry an accent. Malavika Mohanan is a refreshing face but has a long way to go as an actress. Support cast of Lalu alex, Anoop Menon, Shraddha Gokul, Nandu, JP, Archana are solid actors who are under-utilized in the script and by the director. Movie's strengths are its music and visuals. M.Jayachandran's musical score is very good with movie having good number of melodious numbers. The cinematography is astounding and is a visual treat. On the whole, "Pattam pole" is a soulless, synthetic and boring movie with music and cinematography offering some solace. Overall it is a very entertaining musical ROM-COM
