Ortrud was originally written for a soprano, as stated in the first edition vocal score by Breitkopf und Härtel, n.d.. Plate 8411. The role was created by the German soprano Josephine Fastlinger. Although this may prove a highlying role for many mezzo sopranos it is equally often sung by a mezzo soprano as a dramatic soprano.
a is for alto, ms for mezzo-soprano, s for soprano.
