Neighborhoods in Chicago number over 200,[1] but there is no official list of the city's neighborhoods or their boundaries.[2] New neighborhood names and identities continue to develop due to real estate development and changing demographics. Chicago is also divided into 77 community areas, which were drawn by University of Chicago researchers in the late 1920s.[3] Chicago's community areas are well-defined and unchanging, and generally contain multiple neighborhoods. While each official community area has an official definition, there are also unofficial definitions and unofficial sub-areas. A person can be officially resident in one community area but unofficially in another.[4]
