The first Miss Egypt contest was held in 1929. The only winner that held the title of Miss World was Antigone Costanda in 1954. The pageant has been sponsored by the hair care company, Pantene since 1986. Many of the winners have found notable careers in television. It also introduced models and actresses such as Marina Papaelia and Iolanda Gigliotti.

Traditionally, the winner of Miss Egypt represents her country at Miss Universe and runner-up for the Miss World. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify (due to age) for either contest, a runner-up is sent. In 2010 and 2014, Miss Egypt for Miss Earth will be selecting by separate pageant.
