Melissa Ivy Rauch (play /ˌməlɪsə vi ˈrʃ/; born June 23, 1980) is an American actress and comedienne. She is best known for her role as Bernadette Rostenkowski on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

Early life

Rauch was born in Marlboro, New Jersey,[1] the daughter of Susan and David Rauch.[2] She has a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Acting from Marymount Manhattan College. Rauch is Jewish.[3][4]

Career

While studying, Melissa performed as a stand-up comedian around Manhattan, and soon made a name for herself on the New York City comedy scene with critically acclaimed appearances like her one-woman show called "The Miss Education of Jenna Bush", in which she portrayed the former President's daughter which played to sold-out audiences.

In 2009, Rauch played the recurring role of Bernadette on The Big Bang Theory, the girlfriend of Howard Wolowitz. Beginning in 2010, during the fourth season of the show, she was promoted to a series regular going from girlfriend to fiancée of Howard Wolowitz. The two married during the finale of season five. On December 14, 2011, Rauch was nominated as part of The Big Bang Theory cast for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Rauch has been a participant in VH1's Best Week Ever television show. Other acting credits include True Blood, on which she had a recurring role in 2010 as Summer, a girl who likes Hoyt, and The Office. Additionally, Rauch appeared on the American remake of the Australian TV series Kath & Kim. She also appeared in Wright v Wrong, Dirty Sexy Money, and in the film I Love You, Man.[5]

In 2011, Rauch starred in the comedic stage show The Realest Real Housewive alongside Casey Wilson, June Diane Raphael, Jessica St. Clair and Danielle Schneider. The show ran monthly at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater throughout 2011.[6]
