Manhattan Construction Company is an American construction company which originated in Muskogee, Oklahoma and later moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Manhattan has offices in several U.S. cities and Mexico City. Its current headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Manhattan Construction Company was founded in 1896 by Laurence H. Rooney and has remained family owned, today by Francis Rooney and his brother Timothy Rooney. The name of the company comes from the fact that in 1896, Oklahoma had not yet become a state, so the founders had to travel to New York to incorporate the company. Legend has it that the name 'Manhattan' came from a clerk that told the founders that the company needed a name, and Manhattan was the first thing that came to mind.
In the early days, most of the constructions were courthouses, schools, universities and office structures in the south of the United States. During the second world war, the company built over a billion dollars worth of defense structures for the United States Department of Defense. It was awarded the Army-Navy ‘E’ Award for excellence, and later earned a second star for its pennant. The company holds the first corporate charter ever issued in the State of Oklahoma.
Manhattan Construction built the Manhattan Building, Oklahoma State Capitol, Reliant Stadium, the George Bush Presidential Library, the Ballpark in Arlington, the Cato Institute headquarters, the Prayer Tower at the Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States Capitol Visitor Center, and many more. The most notable project completed is the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium simply penned, "Cowboys Stadium" by team owner Jerry Jones in Arlington, Texas.
Manhattan Construction also built the George Mason University Founders Hall in Arlington, Virginia and George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C.. Manhattan Construction is currently building the George W. Bush Presidential Library, making it the only construction company to have built two presidential libraries.
It was the first company to incorporate in the new U.S. state of Oklahoma, in 1896.
