List of universities in England

As of August 2008, there were ninety-one universities in England,[1] out of a total of 109 in the United Kingdom. This excludes approximately 133 higher education institutions that have not been given the right to call themselves a "university" by the Privy Council (such as colleges of higher education). The number of universities has since increased.

The following is a slightly out of date (at October 2012) list of English universities and university colleges recognised by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, together with the date on which they were created. BIS publishes the official list.[2] On Wikipedia the list of UK Universities[3] appears to be more up to date.

Universities[edit]

Where two dates are listed below the first gives the year the institution became a University while the second gives the year the institution was established in another form (for example if it was previously a College or a Central Institution). See also List of UK universities by date of foundation.

'Tuition Fee' refers to the annual tuition fee announced for Home/EU students studying full-time undergraduate degree courses starting in 2012. The maximum equivalent fee for courses that started before 2012 is £3,375.
