The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a major professional basketball league in North America. The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1] The league adopted its current name at the start of the 1949–1950 season when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL).[2] The league consists of 30 teams, of which 29 are located in the United States and one in Canada. In the NBA, a head coach is the highest ranking coach of a coaching staff. The list includes the date of hiring and the performance record of each coach.

Gregg Popovich has served as the San Antonio Spurs head coach for more than 17 seasons, longer than any other current head coach. Popovich has also coached the most games (1,328), won the most games (905), and lost the most games (423) among active coaches with their current team. None of the other active coaches has served more than six seasons for his current team. Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Rick Adelman is the most experienced head coach. He has been the head coach of five different teams during his 23-season head coaching career. He has coached the most games (1,709), won the most games (1,002) and lost the most games (707) among active coaches in their entire coaching careers. None of the active head coaches have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.[3]

All active head coaches are American. Eighteen coaches have spent their entire head coaching careers with their current teams: Mike Budenholzer with the Atlanta Hawks, Brad Stevens with the Boston Celtics, Jason Kidd with the Brooklyn Nets, Steve Clifford with the Charlotte Bobcats, Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls, Brian Shaw with the Denver Nuggets, John Loyer with the Detroit Pistons, Mark Jackson with the Golden State Warriors, Frank Vogel with the Indiana Pacers, David Joerger with the Memphis Grizzlies, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, Monty Williams with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jacque Vaughn with the Orlando Magic, Brett Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers, Jeff Hornacek with the Phoenix Suns, Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, Michael Malone with the Sacramento Kings, and Tyrone Corbin with the Utah Jazz.

After the end of the 2012–13 season, thirteen new head coaches were appointed for the 2013–14 season. Nine of them, Brown, Budenholzer, Clifford, Hornacek, Joerger, Kidd, Malone, Shaw and Stevens, are on their first NBA head coaching job. During the 2013–14 season, the Detroit Pistons fired Maurice Cheeks and replaced him with first-time head coach John Loyer.
