Gregg Popovich has coached the San Antonio Spurs for more than 17 years.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a major professional basketball league in North America. The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA).[1] The league adopted its current name at the start of the 1949–1950 season when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL).[2] The league consists of 30 teams, of which 29 are located in the United States and one in Canada. In the NBA, a head coach is the highest ranking coach of a coaching staff. The list includes the date of hiring and the performance record of each coach.

Gregg Popovich has served as the San Antonio Spurs head coach for more than 17 seasons, longer than any other current head coach. Popovich has also coached the most games (1,410), won the most games (967), and lost the most games (443) among active coaches with their current team. Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Scott Brooks, Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle, and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, are the second longest-tenured head coaches; having being appointed as head coach since the 2008–09 season. None of the active head coaches have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.[3]

All active head coaches are American. Nineteen coaches have spent their entire head coaching careers with their current teams: Mike Budenholzer with the Atlanta Hawks, Brad Stevens with the Boston Celtics, Steve Clifford with the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets, Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls, David Blatt with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brian Shaw with the Denver Nuggets, Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors, Frank Vogel with the Indiana Pacers, David Joerger with the Memphis Grizzlies, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, Monty Williams with the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans, Derek Fisher with the New York Knicks, Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Jacque Vaughn with the Orlando Magic, Brett Brown with the Philadelphia 76ers, Jeff Hornacek with the Phoenix Suns, Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, Michael Malone with the Sacramento Kings, and Quin Snyder with the Utah Jazz.

After the end of the 2012–13 season, thirteen new head coaches were appointed for the 2013–14 season. Nine of them, Brown, Budenholzer, Clifford, Hornacek, Joerger, Jason Kidd, Malone, Shaw and Stevens, are on their first NBA head coaching job. During the 2013–14 season, the Detroit Pistons fired Maurice Cheeks and replaced him with interim head coach John Loyer.

After the end of the 2013–14 regular season, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Los Angeles Lakers, the New York Knicks and the Utah Jazz part ways with Mike Brown, Mike D'Antoni, Mike Woodson and Tyrone Corbin respectively. Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Rick Adelman also left his position and announced his retirement after 23 seasons as head coach. On May 14, 2014, the Detroit Pistons hired Stan Van Gundy to replace their interim head coach. On May 19, after the Golden State Warriors were eliminated from the playoffs, they fired head coach Mark Jackson and replaced him with first-time head coach Steve Kerr. On June 6, 2014, Timberwolves president and part-owner Flip Saunders was named as their new head coach while the Jazz hired first-time head coach Quin Snyder. On June 10, 2014, the Knicks hired first-time head coach Derek Fisher who had just retired from playing. On June 20, 2014, the Cavaliers hired David Blatt, an American coach who has been coaching in Europe since 1993. On early July, the Milwaukee Bucks hired Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd to replace Larry Drew, while the Nets hired Lionel Hollins to replace Kidd. On July 28, 2014, the Lakers hired former Laker Byron Scott to be their new head coach.
