Kiran Kumar is a Mumbai-based Indian actor. He has worked on many Hindi, Rajasthani and Gujarati films. He has been cast as hero in many of the Gujarati movies.[citation needed] He is the son of veteran Bollywood actor Jeevan.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Kiran Kumar is the son of actor Jeevan and is married to a former Gujarati actress Sushma Verma. They have two children. Their son Shaurya, who is in the process of being launched and has worked with David Dhawan, Abbas Mustan, Indra Kumar and Imtiaz Ali as an assistant director. His daughter, Srishti, who runs a jewelry and clothing label called "Sush & Shish" with her mother and works in fashion at IMG Reliance.

Kiran is a Kashmiri by birth and has ties with the royal family by virtue of being the grandson of the Vazir-e-Vazarat of Gilgit.[2] He is a follower of Sai Baba and has a production house named after the saint, Sainama Visions.

Recently he has been honoured with the life membership of the International Film and Television Club of the Asian Academy of Film & Television.

He was one of the first mainstream actors to make the jump from the big screen to TV in 1992 with Sunil Mehta's Ghutan.

Currently one of the highest-paid actors on TV, Kiran will be seen prominently on the silver screen in Born Free Production's Bobby Jasoos. Soham Shah's next release with Sanjay Dutt Sher, also stars Kiran as the lead antagonist. This film is currently stuck in the cans due to Dutt's recent incarceration.

He is a member of CINTAA and its core committee. He assisted with the organization of the Star CINTAA superstars ka jalwa, a televised event that brought the entire Hindi film and television industry together to perform and raise funds for CINTAA.

Career[edit]

He attended Daly College, a boarding school in Indore, enrolled at R.D. National College in Bandra, Mumbai, and later joined the Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI) in Pune. He was known as "Dipak Dar" in FTII among his friends.[2] As a young boy, the film industry were drawn to him, partly because of his father's association with it.[citation needed] Kumar starred in Do Boond Pani in 1971 and went on to play the lead roles in several more movies. Kumar saw his career suffer with the release of movies like Jungle Mein Mangal, among others; however, despite this "slump" Kumar started to work in Gujarati movies where he quickly attained a cult following[citation needed] and the title "The Bachhan of Gujarati Cinema." Rakesh Roshan's "Khudgarz" got him back to Hindi cinema, in which negative roles in films like Tezaab and Khuda Gawah won him accolades as an antihero.

Sunil Mehta's Prem Kishan was his first television series. He has since established himself as a television star in the television industry in series such as: Zindagi, Ghutan, Sahil, Manzil, Katha Sagar, Aur Phir ek Din, Papa, Miilee, Chhajje Chajje Ka Pyar, and more.

At one point he was in the process of starting a production house called Sainama Visions,[citation needed] for which the pilot episode of Aashiana was filmed.
