Jaye Davidson (born Alfred Amey; March 21, 1968) is an American-British model and retired actor. He is best known for his roles as trans woman Dil in the 1992 suspense-drama thriller film The Crying Game,[1] for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, (making him the first Mixed Race British actor to be nominated for an Oscar), and in 1994's Stargate as Ra.[2]

Early life[edit]

Davidson was born in Riverside, California, the son of a Ghanaian father and English mother. His family moved to England when he was two years old, where Davidson grew up in Hertfordshire.

Acting career[edit]

Davidson, who had no acting experience, was discovered by a casting associate at a wrap party for Derek Jarman's Edward II. His androgynous look led to his casting as Dil in The Crying Game. He later played the evil sun god Ra in Stargate.

Modelling career[edit]

Davidson later retired from acting, stating that he "genuinely hated the fame" he was receiving. He became more driven towards modelling, and has since worked on several high-profile photo shoots.

Personal life[edit]

Davidson is openly gay, but does not feel like he is part of the gay community. He once stated: "Homosexual men love very masculine men. And I'm not a very masculine person. I'm reasonably thin. I have long hair, which isn't very popular with gay men."[3]
