I Spit on Your Grave is a 2010 American rape and revenge horror film, and a remake of the controversial 1978 cult film of the same name.[4] It was directed by Steven R. Monroe,[5] and stars Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman, Jeff Branson, and Andrew Howard.[6]

Plot

Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) goes to a cabin in the woods to write her second novel. She gets lost and pulls into a gas station where she encounters a group of grease heads. They close in on her and flirt with her until she accidentally hits the panic button on her car, causing Johnny (Jeff Branson) to stumble backward into a bucket of water. Jennifer drives off and goes to the cabin. Later, Matthew (Chad Lindberg) shows up to fix the bathroom sink and toilet. Jennifer kisses him on the cheek and he runs out. When he meets up with the group he tells them, "she likes me".

That night the gang from the gas station show up at Jennifer's cabin, intent on forcing Jennifer to take Matthew's virginity. They assault Jennifer, making her perform fellatio on a bottle and gun. She escapes into the woods and bumps into Sheriff Storch (Andrew Howard) and Earl (Tracey Walter), the person from whom she rented the cabin. Storch takes Jennifer back to the cabin on the pretense of helping her. He finds her alcohol and marijuana, then pats her down improperly. The gang comes through the door and Jennifer realizes they are in cahoots. They hold her down while Matthew rapes her. After he is done, Jennifer leaves the cabin naked. The gang finds her, and Andy holds her head underwater while Storch anally rapes her. The others also rape her, and Stanley (Daniel Franzese) records everything on his video camera. Afterward Jennifer walks onto a bridge and jumps into the river just as Storch is about to shoot her. The men search for her body but do not find it.

Jennifer survives, living in a run-down house in the woods for a month, eating bugs, rodents, and garbage. She stalks her rapists to learn details of their lives. When Matthew is in the cabin, Jennifer lures him up the stairs by calling out for him. He becomes frantic and slips down the stairs. When he wakes up, Jennifer is on the couch watching him. He apologizes for what he did, but she shows no mercy, putting a noose around his neck and strangling him. She captures Stanley in a bear trap, sets up his camera, and holds his eyes open with fish hooks. She guts a fish and spreads the guts in his eyes and face. Crows come and peck on his face and eyeballs. Jennifer knocks Andy (Rodney Eastman) out with a baseball bat and ties him up over a bathtub which is filling with water. She puts lye in the water and when his strength gives, he collapses into the water. Each time he pulls himself up we see that his face is dissolving. Jennifer strings Johnny up naked, pulls his teeth out with pliers, then forces him to perform fellatio on his pistol. Finally she cuts off his penis, sticks it in his mouth, and leaves him to bleed to death.

After killing Johnny, Jennifer visits Storch's family. Storch races home and learns Jennifer has taken his daughter to the park. Storch goes to the park but no one is there. He gets back in his car and Jennifer knocks him unconscious. When he wakes, Jennifer rapes him with his shotgun. She has attached one end of a string to the trigger and the other end to Matthew's wrist. Matthew is alive but unconscious, and Jennifer tells Storch, "If I were you, I'd tell him not to move". When Matthew wakes up, he triggers the shotgun, killing himself and Storch. Jennifer sits on a fallen tree and smiles.

Cast

Production

Principal photography began on November 2, 2009, under Steven R. Monroe's direction.[16] The film stars Sarah Butler, Chad Lindberg, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman, Jeff Branson, Andrew Howard, Saxon Sharbino, and Amber Dawn Landrum.[6] It was distributed by CineTel, and produced by the company's president and CEO Paul Hertzberg.[17] Lisa Hansen, Jeff Klein, Alan Ostroff, Gary Needle, and Meir Zarchi (director of the original) served as executive producers.[18] Location filming took place in Louisiana.[19] The film was written by Stuart Morse, based on Zarchi's screenplay.

Release

CineTel Films planned a 2010 worldwide theatrical release.[20] The film was part of the Texas Frightmare Weekend on May 1, 2010 in the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Irving, Texas,[21] and part of the Film4 Frightfest on August 29, 2010.[22] The Canadian unrated version premiered[23] at the Fantasia Festival on July 20, 2010.[24] The complete cast and Meir Zarchi, director of the original, were present.[25] An unrated version was released in limited release on October 8, 2010, in the United States.[2][26]

Home media

The film is distributed in the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK by Anchor Bay Entertainment.[27] The DVD and Blu-ray were released in the United States on February 8, 2011. The DVD includes an audio commentary by director Steven R. Monroe and producer Lisa Hansen, 11 deleted scenes, teasers and trailers.

The DVD was banned in New Zealand, just before its April release.[28]

Critical reception

Critical reaction to the film has been negative, with a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[29] Roger Ebert gave the film zero stars (the same he gave the original) and described it as the "despicable remake of the despicable 1978 film". He claimed that it added "a phony sense of moral equivalency", stating "If I rape you, I have committed a crime. If you kill me, you have committed another one. The ideal outcome would be two people unharmed in the first place." He concluded that the first half of the film was the truly offensive part, because the male characters tormenting and finally raping Jennifer was a more plausible scenario than the ways in which Jennifer gets revenge against them.[30] Ebert would later add "this [version] is more offensive, because it lingers lovingly and at greater length on realistic verbal, psychological and physical violence against the woman, and then reduces her 'revenge' to cartoonish horror-flick impossibilities."[31]

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "In addition to all the obvious things that are disgusting about this movie, I Spit on Your Grave is trying to get us to hate each other. Hate it instead. It makes more sense and the hatred is much more deserved."[32] Critic Andrew O'Hehir also denounced the notion that the film has a message, writing that it "just piles imaginary atrocities on top of real ones, and then halfheartedly claims that it means something. Well, it doesn't."[33]

Some support for the film in mainstream press came from The New York Times, which wrote, "Female-empowerment fantasy or just plain prurience, 'Grave' is extremely efficient grindhouse."[34] V.A. Musetto, from The New York Post, also offered some support for the film, stating, "If you can handle it, see it."[35]

Like the original, the film did find limited cult support. Fangoria Magazine wrote that I Spit on Your Grave "...is just as raw and upsetting in its onscreen brutality as the original. Perhaps more so, since the acting is significantly better this time around".[36]
