Gemma Ann Merna (born 11 October 1984 in Cleethorpes, England) is an English actress and glamour model. She is known for playing Carmel Valentine in Hollyoaks.

Awards[edit]

For her role in the British Channel 4 series Hollyoaks, which was Gemma Merna's first major TV role, she won Best Comedy Performance in the 2007 The British Soap Awards.[1]

In the same year's National Television Awards, she was nominated for Best Female Soap Actress.[citation needed]

Personal life[edit]

Merna was born in Cleethorpes, but when she was one year old she moved to Didsbury from where both her parents came.[citation needed] She was engaged to long-term boyfriend Ian Minton.[2] Merna and Minton married at a ceremony on 27 May 2012; present were fellow Hollyoaks cast members.[citation needed]

Merna used to share a house in Liverpool with on-screen sister Jennifer Metcalfe, who plays Mercedes McQueen.[citation needed]She lived in Manchester, going to St.Georges RC High School.

On Sky Sports,[when?] Merna revealed that she is a supporter of both Manchester United F.C. and Liverpool F.C..[citation needed]

In a 2009 interview with Closer magazine she said that having a breast enlargement at the age of twenty-one was one of the best things she ever did and that it gave her so much confidence.[3]

On 14 October 2009 Merna presented awards, with Alan Hinkes, for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, at the Kirkby Suite, Kirkby, Knowsley.[citation needed]
