Freddie Stroma (born 8 January 1987) is an English actor, model and singer, best known for playing Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter film series.

Early life and education[edit]

Freddie Stroma was born Frederic Wilhelm Sjostrom[1][2] in London, England on 8 January 1987, to a Swedish father and a German mother, and he was raised in the nearby town Ascot.[3] He was educated at the boys'-only boarding school Radley College[4] and was the middle child of three with an older sister and a younger brother. Whilst undertaking a degree in Neuroscience at University College London,[4] Freddie's film and modelling career began to flourish, leading him to take a break from his academic studies so that he could appear as Cormac McLaggen in the film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Following filming, Stroma returned to University College London to complete his degree, claiming that it, "would have been a shame to just throw it away."[5] In 2009, he attained a 2.1BSc (a second upper class degree) in Neuroscience.[4][6]

Career[edit]

Acting[edit]

Stroma was accepted into the highly prestigious National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, which led to various acting roles.[3] He played small parts on a string of British TV shows, including Casualty and BBC's Mayo before being cast as Cormac McLaggen in the film Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He attended various premieres for the film throughout the globe.[5] He was later cast as Cool Brett in the crime-thriller film 4.3.2.1. He was later recast in the Harry Potter series in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 and Part 2. He later appeared in the direct to DVD film A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song, as a British student, Luke Morgan, and played a minor role in Pitch Perfect, a 2012 comedy about the world of collegiate a cappella.

He was also cast in the psychological thriller After the Dark with his former Harry Potter co-star Bonnie Wright.[7]

Modelling[edit]

Besides acting, Stroma modelled for Acne Underwear in their Fall/Winter 2008 Collection.[8]

Other[edit]

As a part of his acting, Stroma showcased his talents in music while singing in Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song. He also dabbles with guitar but has never been professionally trained in either.[9]
