He has, since 1994, appeared in various television shows and films, notably as a sexually confused teenager in the 1996 film It's My Party. In 1994, he was cast as Brian Krakow in the teen drama My So-Called Life. He played "Zach" during the first season of the hit show Felicity. He was cast in the television series The Fugitive in 2000, but the show was canceled a year later. Devon also played Sean de Luca in the TV show Roswell and starred opposite Lili Taylor in the Lifetime series State of Mind (2006) and has continued to appear in independent films such as The Anarchist Cookbook and Tripping Tommy (2010). Gummersall's 2010 TV credits include Private Practice, Drop Dead Diva and The Gates.

He married actress and singer Majandra Delfino in 2007, and played her character's cousin in Roswell. They were divorced in 2008.
