Derrick Caracter (born May 4, 1988) is an American professional basketball player.

Caracter grew up in Fanwood, New Jersey. He played high school basketball at St. Patrick High School as a freshman, and attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School as a sophomore, to team with fellow SPF native, and subsequent Duke Blue Devil PF, Lance Thomas, before returning to St. Patrick's for his junior year. Caracter transferred to a boarding school, Notre Dame Preparatory School, during his senior year to focus on academics. He then began his college career at the University of Louisville.[1]

He withdrew from the 2008 NBA Draft and later that summer left the University of Louisville. He then enrolled at the University of Texas at El Paso and, as required by NCAA regulations, sat out the 2008–09 basketball season. He became eligible to play in the second half of the 2009–2010 season. On June 24, 2010, Caracter was selected 58th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2010 NBA Draft, along with fellow rookie Devin Ebanks. During his first season, he averaged only 5.2 minutes per game, 2.0 points per game, one rebound per game, and nearly 46% from the field.[2]

On March 29, 2011, Caracter was assigned to the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA D-League.[3] During the following season, he was assigned to the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

On December 12, 2011 Caracter tore his left lateral meniscus during practice.[4] Throughout rehabilitation he attended team games, but didn't return to play. On January 25, 2012 Caracter was assigned to the Lakers-owned Los Angeles D-Fenders.[5] There, in four games, he had two 'double-doubles' and scored 18 points on 11 shots in just 26 minutes and also had 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.[citation needed]

On February 7, 2012, he was called back to the Lakers training facility. But three days before his contract became guaranteed, Caracter was waived by the Lakers.[6]

Caracter went on to play short stints with the Bakersfield JamRio Grande Vipers, and Idaho Stampede. On April 22, 2012 he was picked up by Mets de Guaynabo, a team in Puerto Rico, and debuted with 17 points and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes of play.[7]
