Darby Stanchfield (born 29 April 1971[1]) is an American film and television actress, best known for her role as Abby Whelan in the ABC drama Scandal.

Early life[edit]

Stanchfield was born and raised in Kodiak, Alaska, where her father was a commercial fisherman. She later moved to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands, and finally Mercer Island, near Seattle. She attended the University of Puget Sound, graduating in 1993 with a degree in Communications and a minor in theater. She graduated from the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.[2]

Career[edit]

Stanchfield has appeared in over 40 television shows and films since early 2000s. She has guest-starred in Diagnosis: Murder, Angel, Monk, and later co-starred in films, such as Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus (2004), The Picture of Dorian Gray (2005) and Waitress (2007).[2]

On television Stanchfield has appeared in recurring roles as April Green on CBS series Jericho from 2006 to 2007, and as Helen Bishop on the AMC period drama Mad Men (2007-2008).[1] She played Shannon Gibbs in NCIS from 2006 to 2012. In 2007 she played Amelia Joffe (replacing Annie Wersching) in ABC soap opera General Hospital.[1][2] Her other credits include guest-starring roles on Bones, Cold Case, Private Practice, The Mentalist, Ghost Whisperer and How I Met Your Mother. She played Meredith, the lead character's first ex-wife, on the ABC series Castle in 2009 and in 2013.[3]

In March, 2011 Shonda Rhimes cast Stanchfield in her drama series Scandal, as Abby Whelan.[4] The series debuted on ABC on April 5, 2012[5] and in the second season rose to become one of the most high-rated dramas on television.[6]
