Clearview Cinemas is a chain of movie theatres within the New York metropolitan area. Most of the Clearview Cinema locations were purchased by Bow Tie Cinemas, LLC in April, 2013.

A subsidiary of Cablevision from 1998 to 2013, Clearview Cinemas was formed in 1994 through a group led by Bud Mayo and was listed as a public company on the American Stock Exchange on August 19, 1997, as of April 2013, operated 47 movie theatres with 253 screens in the New York metropolitan area, including the famous Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City.[1][2]

Acquisition by Bow Tie Cinemas[edit]

Forty one of the Clearview Cinema locations[3] were purchased by Ridgefield, Connecticut based Bow Tie Cinemas. The acquisition, announced on April 29, 2013,[4] make Bow Tie the largest exhibitor in the metropolitan New York area and, with 22 U.S. theaters with 177 screens post-acquisition, the eighth-largest chain in the nation.[5] The Bow Tie chain, founded over 100 years ago by B.S. Moss in the era of the street front Nickelodeons, and now a four generation family-owned company, is also the nation's oldest cinema chain.[6]

Bow Tie will manage the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York, although Cablevision will retain ownership.[7] The Chelsea Cinemas in New York City will become Bow Tie’s Manhattan flagship venue, and it will continue to host events, including the Tribeca Film Festival.[8] Bow Tie states the firm will make "substantial" investments to renovate and upgrade the acquired Clearview sites, including digital projection and 3D capability, in addition to point-of-sale and concession stand upgrades, so the cinemas can show Hollywood's biggest releases.[9][10]

Loyalty programs[edit]

Through May 31, 2013, Clearview Cinemas offered a loyalty program called Clear Advantage.[11] Additionally, Cablevision partnered with Clearview Cinemas to offer Optimum Rewards members "Free Movie Tuesdays" and other discounts.[12]

After the Bow Tie acquisition, the terms of these customer loyalty programs changed effective May 31, 2013.[13][14]
