Area code 929 is an overlay of area codes 718, 347, and 917 in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, as well as the Marble Hill section of Manhattan. The exhaustion of phone numbers in the area led Neustar, the coordinator of the North American Numbering Plan, to announce[1], and New York State's Public Service Commission to approve, 929 in January 2010. The new code is for landlines and mobile devices.

The addition of 929 means there are six New York City area codes (212, 646, 718, 917, 347 and 929).

929 was activated on April 16, 2011.[2]
