Alden Caleb Ehrenreich (born November 22, 1989) is an American actor.[1] He has starred in the independent film Tetro (2009), and played the lead in the 2013 fantasy Beautiful Creatures.

Early life[edit]

Ehrenreich was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of Sari, an interior designer, and Mark Ehrenreich. His stepfather, Harry, is an orthodontist.[1][2] His family is Jewish, and he was raised in Reconstructionist Judaism.[3] Ehrenreich began acting at the Palisades Elementary school in Pacific Palisades, California, and continued doing so at Crossroads School in Santa Monica, California.[4]

Ehrenreich was discovered at a friend's bat mitzvah reception by Steven Spielberg, when Spielberg saw a short comedy movie featuring Ehrenreich. Ehrenreich has described the comedic performance he gave in the movie as: "I ran around as a skinny little punk, trying on girls’ clothes and eating dirt". The meeting with Spielberg led to acting roles on television shows.[5]

In 2007, Ehrenreich auditioned and won the role of Bennie Tetrocini in Francis Ford Coppola's movie Tetro. Coppola requested Ehrenreich read a passage from The Catcher in the Rye for his main audition.[1]

Ehrenreich attended New York University majoring in theatre starting in 2008, but did not finish his degree to pursue acting.[1][6] In 2009, he founded the theatre and film company, The Collectin, with Zoe Worth.

In April 2012, he replaced Jack O'Connell in the role of Ethan Wate in Warner Bros.' fantasy-drama Beautiful Creatures; the film was released in February 2013.[7]

On September 2, 2014, Variety reported that Ehrenreich would be joining the cast of the Coen brothers' newest film, "Hail, Caesar!", currently in pre-production and featuring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Scarlett Johansson among others.[8]
