AOA (Korean: 에이오에이; an acronym for Ace of Angels) is a South Korean idol girl group signed under FNC Entertainment. The five-member band consists of Choa, Jimin, Yuna, Youkyung and Mina, and the seven-member idol group consists of all the members except Youkyung. The group debuted their single album Angel's Story on July 30, 2012. All ELVIS celebrate August 9, 2012 as their Debut Day in celebration for their 1st Debut stage while in Japan, October 1, 2014 is their official Japan debut and also declared #AOADay by Japan Anniversary Association.

History[edit]

2012: Debut (Elvis), acting and Wanna Be[edit]

The eight members were introduced individually through teaser photos from July 16 to 23 (in order: Seolhyun, Choa, Hyejeong, Chanmi, Yuna, Mina, Jimin & Youkyoung).[1][2] AOA was revealed to be a dance group, with some members also playing instruments. Youkyoung (or "Y") is listed as a "half-angel/half-mortal", because she is only a member of the band half, playing the drums, resulting in AOA saying they are a "7+1" group.[3] Explaining the concept of their debut FNC revealed that the seven "full angel" members Seolhyunari[4](Seolhyun), Choaya[5](Choa), Hyejeong.Linus[6](Hyejeong), Chanmi T.T[7](Chanmi), Yunaria[8](Yuna), Minaring[9](Mina), and leader Jiminel[10](Jimin) looked on the human world through their crystal ball, and fell in love with the music of humanity. Y, the "half-angel, half-mortal",also referred to as the "key keeper", became curious about the human world and used the key to visit it with the other angels.[11] The first music video teaser for "Angel's Story" was released on July 24[12] and the second teaser on July 26.[13] "Angel's Story" leaked on July 28, with two days before the official release.[14] The music video for the title track "Elvis" was released on July 30. AOA had their debut stage on August 9 on M! Countdown and then Music Bank on August 10.

FNC confirmed that the group would be making a comeback with a second single album "Wanna Be" on October 10. The album cover was released along with the announcement, depicting the eight members as different fictional characters.[15] Hyejeong, Jimin, Choa, Yuna, Chanmi, Mina, Seolhyun and Youkyung dressed as characters from Kill Bill, Léon, Legally Blonde, Tomb Raider, Harry Potter, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Romeo and Juliet, and The Fifth Element respectively. It was confirmed that five-member band unit, AOA Black, would perform a stage in the first week of promotions for "Get Out".[16] AOA Black made their first comeback appearance on the October 10 broadcast of KM's Music Triangle and performed the band version of "Get Out" for the first time.[16] The band made their second appearance on the October 12 broadcast of Music Bank.[16]

Seolhyun and Hyejeong started their drama activities not long after the promotions for "Get Out" ended. Seolhyun made her acting debut in "My Daughter Seo-young" as CNBLUE's Lee Jung-shin's love interest "Seo Eunsoo".[17] Hyejeong, who previously made a cameo in A Gentleman's Dignity, was cast in Cheongdam-dong Alice as Moon Geun Young's younger sister "Han Sejin."[18]

2013: Musical, AOA Black and Red Motion[edit]

On February 5, Seolhyun was chosen as the new face of Clean & Clear alongside actress Lee Se-young, and was cast in the 2013 SBS daily drama "Ugly Alert" as "Gong Na Ri".[19][20] Yuna was cast in the musical adaptation of Japanese drama "Summer Snow" in the role of "Seolhee", the female protagonist.[21] Choa was cast in High School Musical, playing the role of "Gabriella".[22]

On July 11, it was announced that the band sub-unit, AOA Black (which consists of Jimin, Choa, Yuna, Youkyung, and Mina) would be making a comeback with their third single album with the title song "MOYA". The third single album and "MOYA" music video were released on July 26 and AOA Black had their first comeback stage on KBS Music Bank on the same day.[23] The reception to "MOYA" was very positive, hitting number one on online Korean music charts such as Bugs, Monkey3, and Soribada on the day of its release.[24]

On September 29, FNC uploaded a teaser onto their YouTube account, hinting at an artist's comeback,[25] which was confirmed to be AOA's the next day.[26] On October 1, FNC released teaser pictures for AOA's comeback (album title: "Red Motion").[27] AceOfAngels8, AOA's YouTube account, uploaded a "Red Motion" concept teaser on October 3.[28] On October 8, the teaser for their title song, "Confused" (Korean title: "Shaking"], was uploaded.[29] On October 9, the music video for "Confused" was released.[30] The full album was released on the October 13, along with an "eye contact version" dance practice clip.[31] On December 28, FNC announced that Mina had been cast in an upcoming weekend KBS 2TV drama, 'Good Days Indeed' as the younger version of Kim Hee-sun's character.[32] The drama started airing in February 2014.[32]

On July 24, 2014, FNC Entertainment released AOA's 1st Photobook called "Hot Summer". The "hot" in AOA's photobook "Hot Summer" stands for Honey, Oasis, and Twinkle; the photobook consists of a 108-page photobook, a 15-minute making film DVD, and AOA's poster. 30 of AOA's polaroids are included, along with the members' autographs.
